Citation :
Frauke Ludowig: we haven't had that ever since Nena and her "99 Luftballoons" have been climbing the charts worldwide back in the 80s. 4 boys from Magdeburg- all of them still under 20 (note: pffffft. poor hagen.)- have managed the breakthrough to international music-phenomenon in 2007. Tokio Hotel are the darlings of rock-music loving teenie-girls from Helsinki to Sevilla. cheering masses in all of europe. rumors of Bill being gay, Tom's admittance to only believing in love for one night... Martina Neun and David Whatshisname have backtracked the year together with the boys.

it was their year, this 2007, at least seen from a german music point of view.

Bill: it's totally amazing, kinda.

the boys from Tokio Hotel, all not even 20 years old, no kids anymore but still not entirely grown up, have not only had giant success in their own homecountry.

Tom: we're constantly powering from country to country, all the time.

France, Russia, yes, even in Israel, the girls are screeching at the mere sight of them, and even those often talked about shadow-sides of fame couldn't darken their shining success.

Verona Poot: when you meet them, you realize that you're dealing with bright heads and that they're not just random kids who got casted.

Katja Burkhard: they're simply authentic and i think that's the secret of their success.

Sky DuMont: i think they rock because they're simply... free.

when the year began, they've already been established stars in germany but now that 2007 is almost over, they're stars in all of europe. latest at the french national holiday mid-juni, when thousands of french girls screamed--

fangirls: Tokio 'otel! Tokio 'otel!

--exactly, screamed "Tokio 'otel"--

fangirls: i love you, Bill my angel!

--it became clear: this band is an international phenomenon. the gave their most remarkable performance in Israel during their europe tour though, showing the things that pop-music can do. 62 years after the end of WWII, 4 germans are the favorites of the israeli girls.

Bill: the concert in Israel was another one of those highlights. it's incredible if you think that we really made it there and recently, i've been looking at those pictures from when we had this tour through Jerusalem again and stuff and that was really, really cool and the concert too of course.

2 tours during which the fans all through europe totally freaked out, the second record a chart-breaker as well and from EMA to Echo, lots and lots of music awards. that's the successful resume of the 4 boys from Magdeburg in 2007 but what's the secret of their success? luck, talent or that certain factor X?

Verona: i simply think that part of why they are able to arouse enthusiasm worldwide is the factor of the lead-singer being really.. specific.

Katja: they're simply unique. there's a lot of boy-bands out there but none of them is.. yeah, is styled like Tokio Hotel, which of course is mainly just Bill Kaulitz.

Verona: i think it's very alluring for teenies specifically because even though he's got a very feminine side, he's of course still obviously a young man and i think younger girls are really into that kind of guy.

but is he into young girls as well? not at all, if we can believe some source on the internet, that stated this in september. "Bill outed himself as gay", it said.

Katja: it could be possible but you can't obviously just assume things like that, either. and i think, it really wouldn't be all that horrible anyway.

Sky: it's really pretty unimportant whether he's gay or not.

Verona: he definitely comes off as being very feminine.

Alexander Sholti: who cares whether Bill is gay or not gay?

quite a lot of people actually, and Bill only took 24 hours before he denied it all.

Bill: no, i'm not gay. ..and it would be a waste anyway, considering all the pretty girls standing in first row.

reporter: there was this supposed outing of yours... how annoying is that for you?

Bill: oh yeah, we had one of those every year so far i think. in fact, we spent a lot of time just sitting around and thinking 'okay, so what else can people write about?'. that's the kind of stuff that totally doesn't phase you, you know, it's nothing that could hurt you in any way.

but the other twin-half, Tom, has been providing quite a lot of stuff to gossip about with his for an 18 year old pretty precocious and at least sounding like an sexually well-educated casanova statement that he only believes in love for one night.

Tom: yeah, so i'm always on the jump from bed to bed for a little bit, that's the way it is. and really, for just one night, you can totally fall in love. well. *smiles and pretends to be cute*

Alexander: dude is only 18! i mean, that's not a facade, that's a lifestyle! that's totally normal. if i was 18 again, i'd be the same.

Verona: i sure think that they're having their share of experiences with girls. i mean, they're not that little anymore.

Tom: in the end, i'm still hoping- and Bill is trying to convince me too- that i'll really fall in love again one day. i mean, everyone is always telling me 'you're totally gonna fall on your face about what you're saying now one day'--

Bill: --you know, you gotta cut what he said before. he's only entered puberty now, that means he's only just now starting to slowly find himself and he's gotta try things out and then someday--!!

Tom: --in the end, i'm always telling myself, i'm on the search for true love and such and in order to find her, you gotta search and try out.

they obviously are dishing out the comfortable self-confidence that you're bound to have when you're being celebrated in all of europe. but, as the critics say, Tokio Hotel is still a teenie band who is majorly listened to by girls in puberty. the twins themselves have turned 18 this year so can the band manage the step into the future and grow up as well?

Alexander: sure it's gonna be hard but they've been undergoing a good, solid development so far and haven't attracted attention in a bad way.

Katja: they're gonna be super-successful in the future as well, that's something i really can imagine, especially since you got the feeling that they're all really getting along together really well.

Verona: they know that the can only be that successful as a whole group and as long as they don't break up, i think they're gonna be that successful in eternity.

Bill: being able to make music and stand on stage, we managed that in the past 2 and a half year and it still continues and we're really proud of that.

and so, the boys are marching into the new year in a confident manner. the next tour is starting in march but before that, there's a short christmas break.

Bill: the biggest gift is when everybody gets along with each other on christmas and everyone is around to celebrate christmas too and being surrounded by people you care about. really quite simple but it's really important to us. and sleeping in your own bed!!

Tom: and favorite food.

Bill: yeah.

Tom: so. duck with red cabbage and potatoes that's totally--

Bill: just once! not eating crappy food from gas-stations!!

Tokio Hotel are really on the roll right now. some might not like that but it looks like they'll remain being a german hit in 2008 as well a cultural export-hit in all of europe as well. at least when it comes to people under 20.
